Dodsley was born near Mansfield, and apprenticed to a stocking-weaver, but not liking this employment, he ran away and became a footman. While thus engaged he produced The Muse in Livery (). This was followed by The Toy Shop, a. DODSLEY, ROBERT (–), poet, dramatist, and bookseller, was born inprobably near Mansfield, on the border of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire; but there is no record of his birth in the parish register of Mansfield (Notes and Queries, 1st ser.
